Often we receive a phone call or an email from our website from a prospective customer who is asking for help with their current website. Most business owners know their website can be improved. At the very least they know that a website has value, but just not seeing any value with their website and want to improve it with a professional look.
Let’s look at the biggest mistakes we see when reviewing these websites and note a few things that need to be paid attention to when undertaking a small business website design and development project:
Missing or Wrong Phone Number
It may be hard to believe but so often we find on many websites that the phone number is almost nonexistence or hard to find. It’s critical to have your phone number easy to find and placed on every page of your website. Most often people will look for a phone number in the upper-right corner of your homepage. We have grown accustomed to looking for it there.
It is also important to make sure your phone number has a link so people can just click on the number to make a call. This is especially helpful for individuals on mobile devices. The goal here is to make it as easy as possible for your customers to contact you.
Company Business Address
If you serve customers at your location then you need to have an address on your website that is easy to find. This also is standard practice to show the address in the header of your website. Similar to the phone number your address should direct those that click on it to Google Maps. This makes it easier for customers to find you when they are on the road. They can easily get directions to your business.
Hours of Operation
It is also a good idea to list your business hours. Depending on your website this could go in the header as well but for many websites, it is often in the footer of a website. If the customer finds your hours, and you happen to be open, they are more likely to give your business a call or stop by.
Company Contact Information
In the main menu of your website, you should have a link to your contact page. Even if you have this information in the header of your website it is still best practice to have a page dedicated to contact information. People often will look for a form there if they have a question or want to send a message. People may have questions when you are not open and this allows them an opportunity to reach out to you.
So many websites rely solely on stock photos of people. Be honest with the size of your business and the resources you have available. You don’t have to have the most professional polished photos. Customers would rather see photos that truly represent your business. You need to make your website relatable and showcase the people behind it. It also makes sense to have a photo of your building. It will help people recognize it if they are driving to your location.
Informative, Engaging About Us Page
This is a page that is often overlooked. This page is important, especially for small businesses. When a prospective customer comes to your website, they may want to see who they’re about to do business with. They want to read the story, the history, the mission, the values and see the people behind the business.
Missing or Ineffective Calls to Action
If you are in sales then this term is familiar to you. When you are working with a potential customer you would ask for the sale. When it comes to a website, this doesn’t mean you ask them to buy something. For a website, the call to action would really be asking for the next step. “Call today for our Daily Specials,” “Get Your Free Consultation,” or “Call Today.” You’re simply asking for the customer to take the next step in doing business with your business.
