Why Do We Ask So Many Questions When Quoting the Cost of a Website?
When talking to someone about a website design project, the first question they usually ask is “How much will it cost?” At this point in the conversation, that question is impossible to answer without discovering the needs and wants they are looking to get out of a website. I like to compare it to building a house. You can’t just ask a home builder how much a house would cost to be built. The builder needs to know the size you want, the number of bedroom and bathrooms, etc. When it comes to building a website, it is the same thing. As web designers, we need to get answers to a few questions in order to accurately give a quote. Some of the questions we ask are:
• What is your main purpose for the website?
• Is there any specific functionality you need for the site?
• How many pages will you have on the site?
• Do you want a website that is mobile-friendly?
• Do you want SEO?
• Do you Search Engine or Social Media marketing services?
When the client is shopping around for a price, the biggest issue is trying to figure out what type of website they are looking for. When designing a website for a client, there are so many options that a website can range from a basic site for around 1,200 to a custom-built website with all the bells and whistles for $30,000 or more. If the client is not forthcoming with information it can be impossible to know what direction to take. It forces us as designers to guess, and that’s never a good thing.
